Our broadband cable television systems use an optional set-top box, which is only required if you desire access to PremierCast content, BellSouth's home theatre service, Pay Per View events or our Interactive Program Guide(IPG). The set-top box is like a low-end computer with special communications gear and security. The communications systems enable the box to receive the coax-cable signal and tune to the desired channels, including separating out audio/video information from data such as that used by the IPG. Some of the set-top boxes include a telephone modem for communicating back to our head-end, transmitting purchases, diagnostics and other information.
TSI provided reverse engineering and consultation on algorithm design and performance that assisted in the correction of many of the original problems associated with poor software design.
CD-ROM Content Evaluation
TSI created a process to evaluate 3rd party multimedia applications for their compatibility with the broadband network. In addition TSI assembled a content review team which conduct CD-ROM title reviews. The reviews characterized bandwidth needs, networking behavior, video and audio needs, installation process for remote use on broadband network, and ease of control. The process involved characterizations and redevelopment of installation scripts for the applications to enable the to operate across the broadband network. In many instances the applications were completely unaware that they were operating across the network.
